The House of Learning, "Lyyra" is being built in the municipal center of Kirkkonummi.

A new shared campus is rising in the municipal center of Kirkkonummi, bringing together Finnish- and Swedish-language upper secondary schools, a music institute, an adult education center, and a visual arts school under one roof. Designed as a lifecycle project, the campus has been guided by principles of accessibility, ease of access, and spatial solutions that communicate community spirit and bilingualism. Its sculptural architecture opens the spaces in all directions while making use of modern building materials.

The project, delivered under a lifecycle model, has been designed by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, while construction is being carried out by SRV. Once completed, SRV will be responsible for the building’s operation and maintenance, while ensuring that energy consumption remains within the defined target values for the next 20 years. Covering approximately 9,000 gross square meters, the campus is scheduled to open in 2027.

As lifecycle delivery models become more common in Finland, energy efficiency and low-carbon solutions are playing an increasingly important role in projects. The campus heating system combines district heating with renewable energy sources. An underground stormwater detention system will also be built to manage rainwater runoff. In addition, the building’s carbon footprint is approximately 30 percent lower than that of a conventional building.

Peikko supplied the project with DELTABEAM® Green slim-floor composite beams, manufactured from more than 90 percent recycled material and producing approximately 50 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional steel beams. The solution enables slim-floor structures and allows HVAC installations to be carried out efficiently.

The openings in the hollow-core slab structure are supported by low-carbon PETRA® Green slab hangers, while Peikko’s PCs® corbels support the columns. In addition to structural components, Peikko supplied a wide range of connection products for the project, including ARBOX® rebar connection systems, WELDA® fastening plates, and HPM® anchor bolts.

“Cooperation throughout the different phases of the project was smooth and solution-oriented, which was reflected in seamless progress from design to final delivery. Peikko’s low-carbon solutions were an excellent fit for the project’s lifecycle model, where quality, energy efficiency, and responsible material choices are key priorities,” says Pia Rantanen, Peikko's Project Manager.
