The world's longest immersed tunnel
From Germany to Denmark in ten minutes

Since 2020, one of Europe's most ambitious infrastructure projects has been under construction between Germany and Denmark: the approximately 18-kilometre-long Fehmarn Belt Tunnel, which will provide a fast and direct connection under the Baltic Sea in the future. While the passage currently takes around 45 minutes by ferry, cars and trains will be able to cross the section in around ten minutes in future. The project will thus close a key gap in the trans-European transport network and strengthen mobility between Central Europe and Scandinavia.

The tunnel portal for entry and exit on the German side in Puttgarden is almost 600 metres long. The area covers a construction site of around 90 hectares and places high demands on construction, reinforcement and building processes. Over 800 tonnes of PSB® Headed Anchors of various sizes from Peikko were used. The Headed Anchors are a simple, easy-to-install method of anchoring reinforcement in large-format concrete sections such as tunnel elements. For the individual sections, the bases were constructed first, followed by the side walls and finally the ceilings using the open construction method. This required a high degree of precision and reinforcement reliability – areas in which PSB® Headed Anchors demonstrate their strengths.
